Mobile Devices accounts for 15% of the CompTIA A+ Core 1 — roughly 14 of the 90 questions you will see. It ranks 4 of 5 by weight, so it deserves proportionate — not equal — study time.
What this domain actually tests
Laptops and mobile hardware — the most practical domain on the exam, and the most intuitive if you have ever opened a laptop.
Laptop component replacement is the core: RAM (SO-DIMM, not the desktop DIMM), storage (2.5" SATA, M.2), batteries, keyboards, and display assemblies. Questions describe an upgrade or a repair and ask what part is needed or what the correct procedure is.
Display technologies and the components behind the panel — the inverter and backlight on older LCDs, digitiser on touchscreens, and the Wi-Fi antenna that typically runs through the display bezel (which is why a laptop's wireless can break after a screen replacement — a genuinely favourite exam scenario).
Mobile connectivity: Bluetooth pairing, NFC, hotspots and tethering, and synchronisation.
The traps
Antenna placement in the lid. If a scenario says wireless stopped working after a display was replaced, the antenna cable was not reconnected. This is one of the domain's signature questions and it seems obscure until you have seen it once.
Digitiser versus LCD versus inverter. If the display shows an image but touch does not work, it is the digitiser. If the image is very dim but visible under bright light, it is the backlight or inverter, not the panel. If there is no image at all, it is the panel or the video connection. That three-way symptom split gets tested.
SO-DIMM is not DIMM. Laptop RAM is physically shorter. An option offering a desktop DIMM for a laptop upgrade is wrong on physical grounds.
Mobile synchronisation methods — to the cloud, to a desktop, or over a network — plus what data typically syncs (contacts, mail, calendar, photos, apps). Not difficult, but easy to skip entirely.
Screen sharing, docking stations, and port replicators appear, along with the peripherals you would actually plug into them.
How to study it
If you have an old laptop, take it apart. Nothing in this domain survives contact with actually opening one — you will immediately understand why the RAM is a different shape, where the Wi-Fi card sits, and how the antenna cables route through the hinge.
If you do not, watch a teardown video for the same model twice. It is a distant second, but it is far better than reading.
Then learn the display symptom split (image but no touch / dim but visible / no image at all) and the antenna-in-the-lid fact. Those two account for a disproportionate share of the domain's questions.
At 15% this is a smaller domain, and it is genuinely one of the easier ones — but it is also the one candidates most often leave until the last week and then rush. Do not.
